Tales Of The Unlikely House-Husband: You Win Some, You Lose Some

Parenting is often a matter of good, old-fashioned trial and error. Sometimes, you'll strike it lucky and come across a handy technique. Other times, you'll try something and it'll end BADLY.

For example...

WIN: The single BEST toy you can buy for a wee little nipper is a Jolly Jumper.

For those unaware, a Jolly Jumper is essentially a big harness that attaches, by way of long elastic straps, to the top of a doorframe. You whack the kid in the harness, hang her from the doorframe so that her feet are touching the ground, and she bounces herself up and down to her heart's content.

Lauren absolutely LOVES the thing. It really doesn't matter HOW grouchy and whiny she is, you just bung her in the Jolly Jumper for half an hour and she'll be whooping with joy. Even better, she'll completely wear herself out to the point where getting her to go to sleep is a breeze.

LOSS: When feeding a six-month-old, it is NEVER a good idea to let her hold the spoon.

Mary had the bright idea of solving our daytime feeding problem by starting Lauren on solids. So we picked up a packet of baby rice and began giving her a serve of rice mush every night, so that she'd get used to it.

It's been a rousing success, too. Lauren seems to love eating solids (just like her Daddy!), and she has progressed to two solid feeds per day.

Of course, we learned our lesson early. We'll be handling the spoonwork for a while.

She's adorable! I can't believe how quickly she's growing up!
I wish they made adult versions of the baby boucer, it looks like fun!

Those are great pictures!! She's getting so big!! My Lily is 18months old as of today. It goes by so quick.

Getting them started on solids is so much fun. Watch out for the carrots though. Those damn things stain everything they touch. :P

You might be waiting a while for her to get the hang of that spoon thing, hell even after almost 25 years I still struggle with it.

At least Lauren has cute on her side, thats going to get her out of so much shit as she grows up... something I never had, thats for sure!

Awww firstly, how gorgeous is Lauren!!!! Absolutely beautiful!! I can't wait to be able to start using a jolly jumper. Nash loves to be bounced and I can see he will love it. Unfortunately he needs to do a bit of work on his head control first!

Luli-

Heh. Yeah, I hear ya. Of course, she's MUCH less cute when she's filling her nappies or screaming incessantly. But that's the price you pay, I suppose.

Helen-

You have NO idea. It seems like only yesterday that we were coming home from the hospital, and all of a sudden she's six months old.

Suvvygirl-

Yeah, she's had carrots a couple of times. She wolfs them down, but the end result is REALLY unpleasant.

Mutanto-

Yeah, "cute" was never an arrow in my quiver, either. Frankly, the fact that Lauren is so gorgeous completely flies in the face of the concept of hereditary genetics.

Bonnie-

Yeah, it was only since Christmas or so that Lauren's been using the Jolly Jumper, but it's been a godsend since then.

Count down the days, Bonnie. You will LOVE the respite that the Jolly Jumper provides.

hereditary genetics you say? Stop looking to yourself for the answer. If you missed out on the cute it may just be coming from Mary's side!
